Presidents Day

"George Washington at 23," August 30, 1992 by Howard Finster

So, are we supposed to celebrate all of our Presidents today?  Abraham Lincoln's birthday was February 12th.  George Washington's birthday is February 22nd.  When I was a young public school student, we had holidays on both birthdays.  Now, the holiday has been combined and is always celebrated on the third Monday in February.  This is a rotten deal.  I would like to see the holidays separated again.  And, what's the deal with all of these Monday holidays?  I suppose it makes it easier for people to go out of town, 3-day weekends.  It's also a perfect time to hold a big 3-day weekend sale at your chain store.  If one of these birthdays comes on a Wednesday, so be it.  I think we should take that holiday off from work on the actual day!
To complicate matters, this year the 3-day weekend fell on Valentine's Day, Saturday, February 14th.  You should have seen the decorations at the Original Farmers Market!  It was very schizo...red hearts and mardi gras jesters were everywhere!  Yes, this is also the weekend prior to Mardi Gras!  Oy!  Too much is happening at the same time.  Oh well, I hope you had a chance to enjoy at least one of these holidays!
