I'm Not Holding My Breath
R*A*V*E*L*R*Y
I was introduced to the wonders of Ravelry by Madgik. She was swooning over how faboo this community is. I received a demo of the site at her house. OK. It is cool. I thought I might as well sign up. Well, I signed up waaaaay at the beginning of July and I still haven't received my invitation to join. I thought I'd check my status:
You signed up on July 4, 2007.
You are #13,789 on the list.
6,615 people are ahead of you in line.
7,581 people are behind you in line.
32% of the list has been invited so far.
Must Photograph Yarn and Projects!
I found out that members must photograph their stash, needles, hooks, books, magazines and finished projects, list any problems with patterns, list projects you might want to knit, etc. There are also discussion forums about projects, designer profiles, pattern comments, knit-alongs and more. I suppose I could start cataloging. Ho Hum. I may never be invited!

I was introduced to Ravelry by a co-worker, who is the polar opposite of me. While I like her and admire her work (she's a lace and sock GOD), I could never be like her.
Now that you've told me all that's expected to be a member, I think I might have to see if I can remove my name from the waiting list. I already have a job. . .
Hey Ellen! Ok, Ravelry addict here. There is no "must" with Ravelry - if you don't want to catalogue your stash, you obviously don't have to. What is great is that there are so many options of how to use the site - pattern research (you can see what other users have done with particular projects, yarns, etc.), cataloging your projects and linking them to others (there's a great database there), forums, creating a stash database (for me, that was actually a fun weekend - I got everything pictured and on Flickr, and now I have most of my stash easy to see at a glance, even though it is back in my closet... and on shelves... and in my living room... and under the bed...
Anyway, it's a truly amazing site!
Jess and Casey are inviting about 1,200 people a week right now, so you'll be in soon, it looks like! When you are, let me know and I'll "friend" you. And please join the LA Loves Ravelry group! There are other WeHo SnB members there. :)
OK, Mary-Heather. Thanks for your review. Yes, it is a cool site. If and when I EVER get invited, I'll be sure to "friend" you join the LA group!
Hang in there! I know it's like, WHATEVER right now, but you'll get in. (and there are invites floating around - wish I had one to pass along to you - but maybe someone else will send you one after reading this?)
I've already sussed out for you that there's the Granny Along group, and awesome photos of people's Babette Blankets, so don't give up. Just upload your photos of projects and stash to Flickr so you'll be good to go when you do join. And if it isn't as cool as I say, I'll buy ya dinner at Damon's! :D
I haven't photographed all of my stash--there aren't enough pixels in any camera for that! But I do enjoy scooting around on the site, especially when I can post projects that no one else is doing! It will be fun to be BFFs on the site, so hang in there!
I agree with the others. There is no MUST about ravelry. It is whatever you want it to be. A personal catalog, a place to meet people, a place to find stuff, anything at all. It can be a major time sink, but what can't? I wouldn't hold your breath (even if you do look good in blue), just because it's dangerous. But they are moving through the invites rather quickly.
I just got my invite yesterday, so I giggled when I read your post. I was going to rub it in, but decided to be mature (for once). And to agree with everyone else, I didn't see any requirements in my invitation--just a "Welcome. Here's what you can do." I'm excited to get all my pictures uploaded.
I'm very much enjoying the community myself. Can't wait to see you there!
