Dinner in a Landmark
Last Sunday we were invited to a lovely dinner welcoming our friend, Ms. Patti to Los Angeles. Patti is visiting this week from Louisiana. She lived in Los Angeles for over 20 years, so she has lots of friends here.
Amy and Billy invited us to dinner at their historic Village Green condo.
The Village Green is a National Historic Monument. It was built in the early 1940's, then known as Baldwin Hills Village. A description from Wikipedia: "Village Green, originally named Baldwin Hills Village and within Baldwin Vista, is a historic mid-century modern garden city developed by Walter H. Leimert (1877-1970), which was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2001. The units are now condos on very spacious grounds, attracting seniors, young families, and design professionals as residents."
Here is a very cool video containing old film footage of the building of the Village and it's early years.
Ms. Patti likes this little bungalow on the Village Green grounds
Amy and Billy have a two story unit with a nice patio. The front of their place looks out on a vast lawn with beautiful trees and plants. We took a stroll around the Village to see the various styles of buildings and gardens. There are rolling greens with beautiful, mature trees and plants and long pathways with many areas for lounging. In the summer they have concerts and movies in the park area. It's a very peaceful place to live right in the middle of the City!
Billy, Amy and Patti made a fabulous Southern feast for dinner. We had Catfish, red beans and rice, greens, knockwurst and yummy cornbread with honey butter. Everything was homemade and deeee-licious. You can check out Billy's video of Ms. Patti's cooking adventure here.
I contributed a very sweet dessert, recipe found on the internet, called Pig Cake. It was citrusy and divine!
Thanks again, Amy and Billy for a wonderful evening!

Hey Ella...long time no comment.
Glad to hear you're still around. I enjoy your blog. If I ever come out to LA, I know I can email you and find out some of the best places to go visit and eat.
Anyway, the pig cake looks delicious..take care.
hi Ellen, thanks for the Village Green writeup! Yeah it's a special place in L.A.- everyone should be lucky enough to stay here, or visit for dinner! It took me 20 years to find the place.
Here is Ms. Patti's New Orleans Red Beans & Rice recipe video, I shot just before you came over -- I'd like to share with your readers: http://is.gd/QidKsG
The Miss Patti video was great!
I lived in Baldwin Hills until I was 7. As soon as I read Village Green, I realized i had been there before. Your post unearthed a memory of me going to a play date there at a friend's house there. Thanks for digging that one out of the dusty trunk of my mind.
