Vintage Photo Friday

Van de Kamps Bakery in Vons Market, Los Angeles, 1939

I found the photo above in the Los Angeles Public Library photo archives. This is the south/west corner of Beverly Blvd. and Crescent Hts, L.A./West Hollywood. It seems that world-renowned photographer, Ansel Adams was on assignment for Forbes Business Magazine to photograph Los Angeles just before World War II, particularly focusing on the aerospace industry. There are many photos in and around Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, as well as street life from downtown Los Angeles to Beverly Hills. This group of photos was donated to the LAPL by Adams in the 1960's.

Here is the same corner today:

I miss the windmill!

Ooh, 1939 looks so much better than 2011!! What a find that one is. I can't even imagine Ansel Adams photographing things like the corner of Crescent Heights & Beverly Blvd. Seems so out of his genre. Thanks for sharing.
