Tiki Night @ The Egyptian
King Kukulele and the Friki Tikis
Somehow, the hieroglyphics in the courtyard of The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, combined with lots of Polynesian Pop Tiki items was a perfect match on Saturday for the annual Tiki Night. We did not partake of the luau dinner before the film, but we did manage to catch a few songs by King Kukulele and his Friki Tiki Band. There were many vendors in the courtyard too. Everyone was dressed in their finest Island wear.

The documentary film screened on Saturday was "Tiki Volume 1: Paradise Lost" directed by Jochen Hirschfeld. Interviews from the movie
Many of our friends were in the movie, including Sven Kirsten, Josh Agle aka SHAG, Leroy Schmaltz and Bob Van Oosting, Doug Nason, Greg Escalante and more. It's all about how the Polynesian Pop culture and the current tiki mania came to the United States before and after World War II. Volume 1 only scratches the surface of this pop phenomenon. I can hardly wait for Volume 2!
