Vintage Photo Friday
Lucille Stewart Stationery and Camera Shop. 1957 |
Most of my life I've lived near West Pico Boulevard. I've also resided near Santa Monica Boulevard in Beverly Hills, in the city of Santa Monica, Brentwood and Culver City. I always come home to Pico Boulevard.
I was perusing the L.A. Public Library Photo Archives with a search for "Pico Boulevard" and noticed that Lucille Stewart Stationery and Camera Shop at 8838 West Pico Boulevard in L.A. had tons of photos of their opening day in 1957 listed. This must have been some place to warrant klieg lights in front of the shop for the grand opening. Woo Hoo!
The description for most of these photos is:
A
crowd has gathered outside the Lucille Stewart Stationery & Camera Shop,
located at 8838 W. Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles, to celebrate the store's
grand opening. Neighboring businesses include Selma's Smart Clothes (right), Pico
Washrite (left) and "Ma" Gordons (far left). Photograph taken on
April 18, 1957.
Currently, at this location is the Pico-Robertson Family Resource Center, part of Jewish Family Services of Los Angeles. A few of the storefronts were re-configured and joined together. Lucille's photo shop is nowhere to be found.
See if you can find some "ghost" buildings this weekend. Have a good one.
