Crazy Tall

There's an inordinately tall and strange plant on our front lawn.  Larry is around 5'10" tall, the spear  in the middle of this plant is twice Larry's height!  I do believe this is a spiked aloe or "century" plant.  The bees buzz around it all morning!  It looks like some sort of invader from outer space to me. The spike is the antenna and the thick prickly leaves are the tentacles.  Eeeww.
