Googie Pilgrimage
On Sunday, Larry and I made a pilgrimage to the former Johnie's Broiler (now Bob's Big Boy Broiler) in Downey. You can read the building demolition and preservation story here. We had been to the opening and dedication of the new building about a year ago, but hadn't seen the completed restaurant.
Johnie's Broiler, original restaurant, 1958
The building, inside and out, is beautiful!

The new design is fantastic and definitely echoes the old Johnie's. The food is Bob's. OK, not incredible.
Breakfast was decent though and just the fact that we were dining in a spic 'n span, perfect early 60's design made our meal that much tastier! Check out the events schedule at Bob's and get on down to Downey!

I remember Bob's big boy from my school days it was a great place to gather with my friends and munch on the Hot Fudge Cake - YUM! Everything else was ok, but that cake was hard to beat.
Love that interior & counter. So authentic you expect it to be 1970.
I haven't been to this one yet, but the one in Pasadena is really nice. Tasted original to me!
