Guisados, Echo Park

I've been hearing about the tacos at Guisados for awhile now.  The original Guisados is in Boyle Heights.  Recently, they opened up an Echo Park branch.  The Echo Park Guisados is on Sunset Boulevard, just west of Chinatown...almost Downtown.  It's about a block from artist, Shepard Fairey's studio, giving this spot the perfect dose of hipness.

It's all about the tacos here.  That's all that is offered on the menu.  The corn tortillas are made right there on the premises.  You can look through the front window while you're waiting in line and watch the cooks pat down the masa and grill them.  These are the MOST delicious tortillas I've had in a long time.  They're a bit thick, soft and nearly melt in your mouth.  The many fillings offered for the tacos are almost secondary to the taste of these tortillas to me.

We decided to try our favorite taco fillings....chuletas in salsa verde (pork in green sauce) and camarones grilled with peppers, onions and topped with a Chipotle sauce (shrimp).  Both were positively divine.  I can't wait to go back and try the other fillings.  Since the tortillas are so thick and filling, two tacos each was plenty for dinner.

There's an indoor dining area and an outdoor patio.  The parking lot is small, but there is street parking on this stretch of Sunset.  There are murals in progress on the retaining wall overlooking the patio and parking lot.  There's also a rocky fountain in the dining area that is strung with tiny lights to add to the ambiance.

I want to live in that house and have tacos next door!
